Te Waiti Hut, Urutawa Conservation Area

How To Get There

Te Waiti Hut is at the northern end of the Urutawa Conservation Area, accessed via Otara Road and Te Waiti Stream Road via a turnoff from State Highway 2 less than a kilometre south of Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty. Bushaven Lodge is at the road end and provides parking on their property for trampers at $10 per night (as of August 2017). The Boulders campsite, managed by DOC, is approximately one kilometre before Bushaven.

Tramp Description

The track follows the Te Waiti Stream to the hut, diverting occasionally up a side-stream. Some of these side-streams have small picturesque waterfalls. The track generally remains high above the stream, very rarely dropping down to stream level.

Approximately 2 kilometres from the start, a small bridge crosses the Hastings stream. This is the turn-off to Hastings Hut.

The track to Te Waiti hut continues high above Te Waiti stream. At approximately six kilometres from the start, the track drops down to a stream crossing. Note the current can be quite strong in the stream, especially after heavy rain.

The hut is about another kilometre further from the crossing. The hut is situated in a large open grassy area on a terrace above the stream.

Options from Te Waiti Hut, include following a true left side stream just before Te Waiti Hut to access Lagoon Hut to the east. Note Lagoon Hut is not mentioned on the DOC website, so the route and hut may well not be maintained. Follow Tokenui stream southward, this leads to Tokenui Hut, three to four hours away. On some maps, this route is marked as 'Unmaintained'. A third option is to follow Wahaatua Stream to the south-east, which leads to the same named hut.

A final option and a popular one, is to initially follow the Wahaatua stream, and then head up a track on the true right about two kilometres from Te Waiti Hut. This track leads to the Pakihi Hut and associated track, from where you can head out to the Pakihi Road end making a nice three day tramp.
