The hike starts on Ngauruhoe Place in Whakapapa Village. Whakapapa is located 6 kms from Highway 47 on the central plateau of the North Island, approximately 340 kms from Auckland and 330 kms from Wellington.
Tama Lakes Track overshadowed by Ruapehu
The Tama Lakes walk is part of the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk and also encorporates part of the Taranaki Falls loop walk. It's approximately 17 km return taking around 6 hours. Most of the walk passes through alpine tussock, climbing in and out of the occasional gully. The track is well marked with poles and very well-maintained.
On a clear day, there are fantastic views of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe plus of course Tama Lakes themselves. Lower Tama lake is reached in around two hours from Whakapapa and is a short side trip if you are walking the Northern Circuit.
Lower Tama Lake
It is well worth continuing on up to the Upper Tama Lake, as not only do you get to see the lake but you see more great views of the Lower Lake and Ruapehu. It's an extra 45 minutes from the Lower Lake to the Upper.
Upper Tama Lake with Ngauruhoe in the background
Taranaki Falls is a short side trip along the Tama Lakes route with the track passing close to the top of the falls themselves.
